LEXDEN GRANGE, COLCHESTER, ESSEX
One of Colchester’s main claims to fame is that the town is the oldest recorded in Britain. It’s not difficult to see why the Romans chose to settle here some 2,000 years ago – the town’s strategic position on the River Colne and its proximity to the North Sea coast were obvious influences, but the beauty of the surrounding countryside, later immortalised by Constable and Gainsborough, quite possibly won them over.
However, despite its celebrated past, Colchester’s sights are set firmly on the future, with four ambitious regeneration projects underway. Extensive funding will revitalise key areas with new homes, businesses, shops and facilities to ensure continued growth and an improved quality of life for Colchester’s residents.
When it comes to nightlife, the town has scores of friendly pubs, clubs, bars and a huge diversity of dining opportunities.
For entertainment, there are theatres and a multi-screen cinema, and sporting enthusiasts will head for Colchester Leisure World or try their hand at go-carting, ten-pin bowling, golf or roller-skating – all within easy reach.
Those with children are spoilt for choice for family days out with Colchester Zoo, the Minories Art Gallery or the Railway Museum. There are some beautiful open spaces at either Castle Park or the 300 acre High Woods Country Park. If you need a little relaxation after all this activity then indulge yourself with a dip in the spa pool at Aqua Springs.
It’s also reassuring to know that there is an excellent selection of state and private schools for all ages and abilities, as well as a 6th form college and the University of Essex.
